The easiest route into
Cabeza Prieta National Wildlife Refuge is via the Charlie Bell Road starting in Ajo; this panorama shows the desert near the road just inside the refuge boundary, south of Childs Mountain. The sandy, stony ground is covered by palo verde, saguaro, cholla and ocotillo, and is fairly level for many miles westwards, until the next range of hills (Growler Mountains).
