The city of Gilbert occupies 76 square miles on the east side of Phoenix, bordered by Mesa and Chandler, containing thousands of residential homes, especially in the north and center; the southern section is more agricultural though even here new estates are gradually replacing some of the remaining open areas. The city is delineated by Baseline Road to the north and Powers Road to the east, and is crossed by one freeway, Loop 202. Phoenix Mesa Gateway Airport is situated just outside the eastern boundary. The main shopping and business district lies alongside Loop 202, including SanTan Village and Spectrum Commercial Core; other mostly commercial streets are Val Vista Drive and Baseline Road. Some of the most upscale residences are at the Crystal Shores development, based around a series of artificial lakes.
