Half way between Tucson and Casa Grande in southern Arizona,
Picacho Peak State Park contains a small section of the Sonoran Desert centered on an ancient volcanic peak, rising 1,500 feet above the surrounding flat plains. The park is easily accessed from Interstate 10 which runs right past to the east, and it has a popular campground, but the main attraction is the 2 mile trail to the summit (aided by cables and railings in some places); from the top, the views extend up to 50 miles in all directions, towards many other, distant, mountain ranges.
