Tropicana
One of select group of hotels along Las Vegas Boulevard that had been open for over 60 years, Tropicana remained quite popular despite being surrounded by several larger and more modern resorts, at the south end of the Strip, but in the end, declining revenues led to its closure, on 2nd April 2024. The hotel is the closest to
Las Vegas International Airport, and east facing rooms have a fine view over the runways and terminal buildings, though double glazing ensures a quiet night's sleep. Rooms on the west side overlook a large enclosed tropical garden containing several spas, waterfalls and pools, including a swim-up bar; for those wanting to escape the sun, the hotel also has one of the few indoor pools along the Strip. The 61,000 sq ft casino is situated at the front of the hotel, by the Las Vegas Boulevard-Tropicana Avenue intersection, while the other main facilities comprise seven restaurants, several lounges,
Glow, A Mandara Spa, a hair salon, 35 specialty shops, the
Island Wedding Chapel, a business center and 45,000 sq ft of meetings/event space.
Tropicana is a good choice for traditional Las Vegas entertainment, though its most famous show (
Folies Bergere, running continuously since 1959) was performed for the last time in May 2009. Current choices include
Laugh Factory, stand-up comedy from a Hollywood-based organization, while a more unusual production is the
Mob Attraction Las Vegas, an interactive fusion of special effects and historic artefacts. The hotel underwent a major modernization in 2011, introducing a South Beach theme and an informal name,
The Trop, followed by another relaunch in 2013, now known as the New Tropicana. As of January 2013 the property is also marketed as Tropicana Las Vegas - a DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel.
