The
cucurbitaceae (cucumber, or gourd) family are a group of vines, which grow close to the ground, or climb with the aid of tendrils. Leaves are simple (undivided), though often with deep, palmate lobes. The fruits are large, and many are edible, including cucumbers, pumpkins, squash and melons. The radially symmetric flowers have 5 sepals and (usually) five petals, often fused to form a tubular corolla. Flowers contain only stamens or only pistils. The US is home to 30 genera and 74 species, in most types of environment except the high mountains, though in general plants are rather uncommon.
