Hulsea algida is found in a few mountain ranges in Nevada, including in
Great Basin National Park, but its two main regions are the Sierra Nevada and the White Mountains of California, and the northern Rocky Mountains, extending into northeast Oregon.
Leaves grow mostly at the base; the few stem leaves are small and well-separated. Stems and leaves have a covering of soft, glandular hairs. Stems are topped by a single flowerhead, occasionally two. Phyllaries are oblong in shape, tapering to a narrow tip, and are covered by long, shaggy, white hairs. Flowerheads contain between 25 and 60 yellow ray florets, around a center of up to 100 orange-yellow disc florets.
