Week 3 - Corpus Christi to El Paso; North Padre Island
Wednesday 6 July 1994: The temperatures at the sea front were about
10-15 degrees lower than those inland, around 85 instead of 100, which made
for a comfortable night. We awoke to an almost deserted beach with only the
innumerable seabirds for company. Most of these were a species known as the
laughing gull, but there were also pelicans and herons. People came and went
during the day, but we stayed, with only a brief drive to the town and back for
provisions. After travelling 1000 miles in three days, this was the perfect
place to relax for a while; few people, ideal weather and a marvellous
view. The sea temperature was as warm as in a heated pool, so this was a great
place for swimming, apart from the dangers of stinging jellyfish which were
quite common and were washed up regularly on the beach. It was rather windy,
however, but not excessively so. For most of the journey across Texas, the
skies tended to cloud over during the afternoon and it became rather humid,
but for the three days we spent at the beach there was not a single cloud
visible from dawn to dusk.
