From the visitor carpark at Flaming Gorge Dam, a short path leads to a picnic area on a grassy promontory, near several sandy beaches and overlooking the east end of the reservoir. The dam is surrounded by low, wooded hills formed of Weber sandstone, deep red in color and angled by about 20° from the horizontal.
