The New Hance Trail emerges from the end of Red Canyon and meets the Colorado River directly opposite the Hance Rapids, which cause the largest single drop of the river through the 277 miles of the Grand Canyon. On the far side the cliffs rise up steeply, formed of the same deep red Hakatai shale that lines the last few miles of the trail through Red Canyon. The confluence of the two canyons is wide and open, with several sandy areas suitable for primitive camping.
