The central Arizona city of
Florence sits beside the
Gila River at the edge of a large agricultural area that extends westwards towards Casa Grande, in contrast to the lands to the east, which are totally undeveloped, rising gently towards the rugged summits of the
Tortilla Mountains. Access routes are Hwy 79 from the north (linking with US 60 from Apache Junction), Hwy 287 from the west and Hwy 79 from the south (the
Pinal Pioneer Highway), which crosses flat terrain especially rich in desert plants, on the way to Tucson.
Attractions in Florence include
Pinal County Historical Society and Museum, featuring exhibits and references about the local and family history of this region, while two nearby sites of interest are
Casa Grande Ruins National Monument 10 miles west and
Boyce Thompson Arboretum 27 miles northeast.
