Least Visited NPS Units: El Morro National Monument

For a small preserve, El Morro National Monument in northern New Mexico offers varied attractions including colorful sandstone rock formations, a restored mesatop pueblo, and a reasonably challenging trail (2 miles), but the main point of interest are thousands of historic inscriptions, from Ancestral Puebloans, Spanish missionaries and early American settlers. For cross-state travelers along Interstate 40 to the north, the monument can be seen with a diversion of just 40 miles (also passing El Malpais National Monument), yet comparatively few people make the journey.
