Shield Spring is located right beside the trail, opposite the junction with the side path to
Castle Geyser, in a partly wooded region. The pool is 12 feet across, with a deeper vent about half this, and several smaller vents, all filled by calm, hot, blue water that bubbles very gently. A thin sinter ring encircles the pool, and the small run off channel on the west side is colored a rich shade of orange by algae. The placid nature of the pool is evident from the surrounding grass, which in some places grows right up to the sinter rim.
The last few thermal features along the Upper Geyser Basin tour are along the side trail to Castle Geyser.
