Mission Valley Hotels

One of the best of the dozens of hotels along I-8 through Mission Valley, the 417 room Crowne Plaza San Diego has all the amenities expected of a 4 star luxury property, together with a reputation for good customer service and clean surroundings. The 8 story building is a mile east of the I-8/I-5 intersection, on the north side of the highway adjoining the woods and lawns of Riverwalk Golf Club, within a mile of University of San Diego, Mission Bay Park, Old Town San Diego and Presidio Park. Sea World, and downtown San Diego, are both 4 miles away. The central attraction of the hotel is a beautiful garden area containing a large outdoor pool, whirlpool, many palm trees and other tropical plants. Other facilities include a health/fitness center, sauna, beauty salon, gift shop, a bar/lounge, 2 restaurants, and 26 meeting rooms totaling 26,000 sq ft of event space

Although one of Marriott's older San Diego properties, the Mission Valley hotel remains popular owing to its well-connected location, the peaceful resort setting, and the attentive staff. The 17 floor building contains 350 well furnished rooms, all with private balcony or patio; those on the west side overlook the central pool and garden area. Five luxury suites are also available, plus two concierge levels. The neighborhood is quiet and peaceful - the wooded San Diego River flows past the hotel, yet the I-5/I-805 intersection is just two blocks away, and Westfield Mall is half a mile west. The Marriott has one restaurant (American/Spanish style), and 17 meeting rooms.

The Sheraton is a large, well-established, full service hotel on the south side of Interstate 8 at the Mission Center Road exit, backing on to a wooded hillside. There are several restaurants adjacent, and many more on the far side of the freeway, in and around Westfield Mall. Downtown San Diego is 4 miles south, SeaWorld 5 miles west. Accommodations include several types of suite, with sofa bed and balcony; all are on the uppermost floors and so have the best views. The signature restaurant is the American-style Cru Bistro, open for dinner, lunch & breakfast, and also providing 24 hour room service. The meetings facilities cater for events of up to 540 people.

The Hilton is nearly the easternmost of the long row of hotels on the south side of Interstate 8, just east of the Hwy 163 intersection, nestled at the foot of a wooded hillside and close to a good selection of shopping and dining; there are two large malls within one mile, Westfield Mission Valley and Fashion Valley. The hotel has 349 rooms, all featuring upscale bedding, and pleasantly decorated in a range of subtle colors. Stish restaurant/lounge serves breakfast, lunch, dinner & evening drinks. Guests can relax by a a rooftop outdoor pool, on the sunny south side of the building, well away from the main road. The meetings facilities can cater for events of up to 750 people (in the Carmel Ballroom).

The stylish, oversized rooms at the DoubleTree by Hilton hotel face east or west, looking out along the busy I-8 corridor a couple of miles north of downtown San Diego and 5.5 miles by road from the international airport. All accommodations have a private balcony, sofa bed and work desk, while the suites offer enhanced living space; some are family suites, complete with bunk bed and child-size chains & table. The onsite restaurant/bar is open all day until 11 pm, and provides room service to 10 pm. 10,000 sq ft of indoor/outdoor meeting space includes a pavilion beside a tropical courtyard and a ballroom (capacity 300 people) offering spectacular views of Mission Valley. Also available are an outdoor pool, whirlpool, firepits, fitness center and business center.

The 303 room DoubleTree San Diego is located on the north side of Mission Valley, and although right next to the Cabrillo Freeway (Hwy 163) and a shopping center, the hotel has a peaceful setting, partly surrounded by trees & bushes and close to a tranquil lake on the San Diego River. Beside the freeway, and the nearby I-8, I-5 and I-805, easy travel to area attractions is facilitated by the light rail system - the Hazard Center stop is just down the street. The hotel occupies quite a large site that includes two tennis courts, a tropical outdoor pool area and a 20,000 sq ft meeting/events center; inside, the main facilities are another pool, a bar, a Mediterranean-stye restaurant, a fitness center and business center.

The Courtyard hotel in San Diego's Mission Valley features state-of-the-art facilities and modern, stylish furnishings. The 321 rooms & suites (on ten floors) and all the public areas are elegantly decorated with bright, bold colors, and the hotel has a wide range of full service amenities. The fitness room, business center and convenience store are all open 24 hours; other facilities are a restaurant/bar, outdoor pool, spa, and 11 meeting rooms (over 6,000 sq ft of space). The Courtyard sits alongside I-8 (at 595 Hotel Circle South) in the middle of a large parking area at the edge of a wooded hillside, within walking distance of Fashion Valley Mall and the Riverwalk Golf Course, though despite the spacious grounds, a daily parking fee is charged.

New for 2017, the Homewood Suites by Hilton is situated at the west end of Hotel Circle, 1.2 miles east of the I-5/I-8 junction, within easy reach of all area attractions; Mission Bay Park, Fiesta Island and Sea World are 3 miles west. Accommodations comprise two bedroom, one bedroom and studio suites, all equipped with a full kitchen; maximum occupancy is eight guests. Daily hot breakfast and weekday evening receptions are complimentary, while snacks and cookable meals can be purchased from a 24 hour market. Food can also be prepared using the fire pits by the patio. A fitness center, outdoor pool, hot tub and meeting space are the other main amenities.

Although the Homewood Suites is one of the closest hotels to the busy I-8/Hwy 163 intersection, the place has a relatively quiet setting, separated from the main roads by other buildings, at the foot of the steep, wooded slopes on the south side of Mission Valley. The newly constructed hotel opened summer 2016, adding to the extended stay/all-suite lodging choices in this popular district of San Diego, within 6 miles of such locations as Seaworld, San Diego Zoo, Qualcomm Stadium, the international airport and the city center. Both daily hot breakfasts and weekday evening light dinners are complimentary at the hotel, which also offers an outdoor pool, fitness center and boardroom. All suites (one bedroom and studio) contain a full kitchen.

The Hilton Garden Inn is a four floor, 178 room hotel with friendly staff and a good location, alongside I-15 (exit 8; Aero Drive) near the edge of the hills towards the north side of the city. The center of Mission Valley lies 2.5 miles south, with most downtown San Diego attractions within a further 5 miles. For shopping and dining there is row of restaurants and large stores just to the south. The inn offers full service amenities that include an outdoor pool, six meeting rooms, restaurant/lounge (open for dinner & breakfast) and a fitness center.

Newly constructed in 2014, the Hampton Inn is located towards the west end of the many properties on Hotel Circle, the southern I-8 frontage road, and it presents an elegant appearance, lined by palm trees and backing on to wooded slopes. Free hot breakfast is provided (take-out version available) and there is one restaurant adjacent; many more can be found a short drive away in Old Town San Diego.Drinks and snacks can be purchased 24 hours a day at the on-site convenience store. For relaxation the hotel offers the usual pool, hot tub and fitness center, plus an outdoor patio with fire pit. The hotel is within walking distance of tropical parkland on Presidio Hill, once the site of Fort Stockton.

SpringHill Suites by Marriott Mission Valley features a pool, fitness center, meeting space, 24 hour convenience store, and oversized guest rooms with sofa bed, microwave & refrigerator. Free hot breakfast is provided each morning, and wi-fi is also complimentary. The hotel opened early 2016, adjacent to an indoor skydiving facility, located in a busy area between I-8 to the south, Camino del Rio to the north, Qualcomm Way to the west and I-805 to the east, though also just a short walk from more peaceful surroundings along the San Diego River. Shopping and dining are also close by, at Westfield Mission Valley.

The Ramada Suites Mission Valley hotel has a tree-lined location just southeast of the junction of I-8 with Highway 163, the Cabrillo Freeway - 5 miles or less from the numerous attractions in and around downtown San Diego. Two nearby sites, both less than a mile away, are the Fashion Valley and Westfield Mission Valley shopping malls. The 126 suites, on three floors of a new-looking building built around an outdoor pool, hot tub and tropical garden, are equipped with a microwave, refrigerator, coffee maker and ironing facilities. A few are full sized, two-room suites. Other amenities include free breakfast, games room, newsstand and guest laundry.

Although mostly fully developed, the narrow strip of land between Interstate 8 and the steep hills on the south side of Mission Valley does have a few vacant lots, and one is now the site of a newly constructed (summer 2015) Holiday Inn Express hotel, which is shielded from the freeway by two adjacent properties and so provides quiet accommodations. The 89 room/suite establishment is 4 miles by road from both Seaworld and downtown San Diego, and 6 miles from the international airport. Highlights include free breakfast buffet, an outdoor pool, business center and fitness center.

Candlewood Suites San Diego enjoys a slightly elevated position on the south side of Mission Valley, high enough for most rooms to have long distance views along the I-8 corridor; the property is set back 200 feet from the frontage road (Hotel Circle) so all accommodations are quiet and peaceful. The 50 extra large suites feature free internet access, an executive desk and fully equipped kitchen, while the hotel also offers a business center, convenience store, guest laundry and 24 hour fitness center. The Candlewood Suites opened fall 2012, after renovation of an existing property (Hawthorn Suites)

With an easily reached location just off exit 3 of I-8 (a mile east of the I-5 intersection), the Best Western Zoo/Sea World at 2485 Hotel Circle Place is well placed for visitors to all the San Diego area attractions. Mission Bay and Sea World are a 3 mile drive to the west, while the Zoo lies 5 miles southeast. Despite the proximity to the interstate, the hotel has a relatively peaceful, almost rural location next to woodland and a small lake at the edge of Riverwalk Golf Club - at the end of a short side road near the Crowne Plaza hotel. The Comfort Suites is quite a large building, containing 148 rooms, a fitness center, games room, guest laundry and a dining area where free continental breakfast is served. There is an outdoor pool and hot tub at the front.

The full service Best Western Seven Seas hotel offers a restaurant, bar, outdoor pool, hot tub, exercise room, guest laundry, and a tree-lined location beneath wooded hills at the southwest corner of the intersection of I-8 with Highway 163 - adjoining the UCSD Hillcrest Medical Center. Many of the 307 rooms are on the small side but clean & comfortable, and some have nice views over the pool area. The hotel operates a free local area shuttle, within range of sites like Sea World and San Diego Zoo. For shopping, the Fashion Valley Mall is within walking distance - 0.6 miles north, next to Riverwalk Golf Club.

The Howard Johnson Express Inn faces the south side of Interstate 8 about half way along Hotel Circle; a four floor building of 81 refrigerator/microwave-equipped rooms, with views across the partly wooded surroundings towards the neighboring business premises. From here, the entrance to Sea World is 4 miles west, and the city center 4 miles south. Wi-fi and continental breakfast are complimentary. The hotel has a reasonable-sized parking lot with a small outdoor pool at the rear, well away from the main road; interior facilities include a business center, ATM and coin-operated laundry.

The entrance to Seaworld is 4 miles west of the Days Hotel, while downtown San Diego is a similar distance south. The exterior corridor, three floor property is one of the easternmost Hotel Circle establishments, and it has a slightly elevated position partly enclosed by trees, beside Bachman Place which leads to the UCSD Medical Center at Hillcrest. The twin accommodation blocks are angled away from the main road, so most rooms offer peaceful lodging. There is one restaurant/bar on site, a few more adjacent and many others on the far side of I-8, in and around Fashion Valley Mall. Also on offer are free continental breakfast, a business center, meeting space, outdoor pool and microwaves/refrigerators in all guest rooms.

San Diego State University lies just across I-5 from Days Inn Mission Valley, 2 miles away by road. Other nearby attractions include Lake Murray (4 miles), Mission Trails Park (4 miles), Qualcomm Stadium (2.5 miles) and Admiral Baker Golf Course (3 miles). The inn is a relatively large place, with four floors, 96 rooms (some featuring a kitchenette) and a good sized parking lot, decorated with various species of palms and other trees. Access is via a quiet side street, a no-through road. The surroundings are hilly, and partly residential; the closest restaurants are one mile west, along Mission Gorge Road. Continental breakfast is provided free of charge.

Super 8 San Diego sits at the east end of the southern section of Hotel Circle, just as the road emerges from the bridge beneath Interstate 5; a location 4.5 miles from SeaWorld and 2.5 miles from San Diego Zoo, on the north side of Balboa Park. UCSD Medical Center Hillcrest is within walking distance to the south, on top of the low hills bordering Mission Valley. The motel has a standard appearance, its guest rooms contained within a long, narrow, three floor, exterior corridor block, and it offers the usual basic range of amenities.

Located midway (9 miles) between the centers of San Diego and El Cajon, the Rodeway Inn is well connected to all nearby sites by interstate 8, running right past the hotel - access is from exit 9 (Waring Road). San Diego State University, the Qualcomm Stadium, Mission San Diego de Alcala and the Admiral Baker Golf Course are within 3 miles, with Mission Bay and Mission Valley a short drive west. The inn receives good reviews for its cleanliness & customer service and has quite good facilities for a budget motel, including an outdoor heated pool, free continental breakfast, and a microwave/refrigerator in each room. Dinner is available from Nicolosi's Italian Restaurant, right next door.
