Most of the named South Rim points are either right beside the road, or separated from the highway by trailless woodland; the one exception is
Shoshone Point, reached by an easy one mile path that starts along the East Rim Drive, 2.5 miles east of the US 180 junction. After a pleasant walk through the ponderosa pine forest, the route emerges to the rim, giving a fine vista over 180 degrees of the canyon. Basic facilities including picnic tables and fire grills are located at the end of the trail, usable by advance reservation.
