Over 20 phacelia species are found in the Mojave Desert: phacelia crenulata (notch-leaved phacelia) is one of the more widespread, and it produces a branched stem bearing clusters of bright purple flowers, which have protruding purple stamens, topped by yellow-brown anthers. Stems and leaves have a fine covering of short hairs. The range of the plant extends eastwards into Texas.
