The
Golden Gate Bridge is the most recognizable landmark in San Francisco, visible from many locations across the city, but best viewed from the north, at the edge of the Marin Headlands in
Golden Gate National Recreation Area. The bridge is not part of the NRA though most of the adjacent land is, including two former military sites, Fort Point on the south side and Battery Spencer on the north, from where the bridge aligns perfectly with the often fog-covered city center beyond. The road to this viewpoint continues westwards to Point Bonita, site of a famous lighthouse, then descends to the first easily-accessible section of this part of the coast, at Rodeo Beach.
