The unusual, photogenic, orange and grey sandstone found along the Pacific coast in Salt Point State Park extends 30 miles further north, viewable in such places as Stewarts Point, Gualala Point and
Point Arena, this at the northern end of the outcrops. The strata around the point are inclined by up to 70 degrees, and eroded to form narrow inlets, jagged ridges, parallel channels and other strange shapes. The point is home to a historic lighthouse and is crossed by various trails, accessed by a side road off Highway 1. On the north side of the point, the cliffs stop abruptly, replaced a long sandy beach and grassy dunes, part of Manchester State Park.
