North of Point Arena and Manchester State Park, the next major shoreline preserves are found 30 miles north, either side of the picturesque community of Mendocino, the most visited being
Mendocino Headlands State Park, adjacent to the town. This contains a promontory bordered on three sides by the ocean, and toured by a short scenic drive. Paths follow the edge of the peninsula, giving varied views of cliffs, inaccessible beaches, sea caves and offshore rocks. The park also includes a wooded section of the Big River, just south of town.
