The high peaks of the King Range slope down to the Mattole River towards the north end of the Lost Coast, and beyond, Mattole Road runs for a while right beside the ocean, but the coastline remains remote and largely undeveloped for another 30 miles, until the major city of Eureka, though even here most roads are away from the coast, separated by miles of dunes and empty beaches, and Humboldt Bay. The next popular shoreline preserve is Trinidad State Beach, which features clean sands, tidepools, sea caves, an arch and several steep-sided islands. Nearby are Trinidad Head, a photogenic, protruding rock, and Trinidad Pier.
