There are many more spectacular groves of coastal redwoods further north in California, but the trees in
Muir Woods National Monument receive the most visitors, owing to the proximity to San Francisco - the preserve is just 10 miles north of the Golden Gate Bridge, albeit partly on a narrow, winding road. The monument is small, and the main trail, a one mile loop, is usually very busy, though several longer paths lead to more peaceful areas.
