There are many beautiful sections of the Rocky Mountains in Colorado, but perhaps the best is within
Rocky Mountain National Park, located towards the north edge of the state, very popular both because of the spectacular and easily accessible mountain scenery, and because of the closeness to the Denver metropolitan area - Estes Park, beside the east entrance, is just 70 miles from the city center. Highway 34 - the highest contiguous paved road in the US - crosses the park from east to west, while a good network of paths access most areas of the backcountry, leading to valleys, glaciers, lakes and summits, some along the continental divide.
