Four Spanish missions from the 18th century are protected as
San Antonio Missions National Historical Park, which also contains woodland, parkland and trails along a ten mile section of the San Antonio River, south of the city center. Although entirely surrounded by the suburbs, the missions retain their sizeable gardens, and their tranquil atmosphere. A fifth mission (The Alamo) is close by, though not part of the park. The southernmost four missions are still used for regular church services.
