Death Valley is the largest national park in the US outside Alaska, and one of the most varied, containing land ranging in elevation from -282 feet at Badwater to 11,049 feet at the summit of Telescope Peak, and such landscapes as salt wetlands, springs, slot canyons, sand dunes, dry lakes and extensive mountain ranges, plus many historical relics. Large areas are relatively inaccessible but much can be seen along the paved park roads. The heat restricts activities for at least half the year, though the extreme conditions are the main reason why some people visit.
