San Francisco Maritime National Historical Park is centered on a pier-protected beach in the Fisherman's Wharf area of San Francisco, and it contains several components - a museum, visitor center, research center and eight historic ships, the earliest built in 1886. Visitor numbers are high partly because of the city center location and the proximity to other attractions like Fisherman's Wharf and Fort Mason. The park was created relatively recently, in 1988.
