Amistad National Recreation Area in south Texas is not so interesting scenically - a large preserve based around a lengthy, branched reservoir along the
Rio Grande, bordered by low cliffs and desert hills, that is popular because of the year-round recreational opportunities, which include fishing, boating, scuba-diving, swimming, camping and picnicking. Most of the shoreline is inaccessible overland, and the NRA has no extended hiking trails. Amistad is close to
Del Rio but quite far from other large cities in Texas.
