The Colorado River flows along the western edge of
Rocky Mountain National Park, meandering southwards through the flat, marshy grasslands of
Kawuneeche Valley, lined by scattered groves of pine and aspen, good habitat for wildlife including elk. The river can be easily viewed from many pullouts along the park road (US 34), and is crossed by several trails, though pools and boggy areas restrict cross-country hiking hereabouts.
