The historic city center of Yuma is right beside the Colorado River, though most facilities now are several miles southeast; the old downtown area is quiet, and ideal for walking around. There are several parks beside the river, including the little-known NPS unit of Yuma Crossing National Heritage Area, which features such locations as Yuma Quartermaster Depot, Yuma Territorial Prison, and a strip of riparian land adjoining the river. South of Yuma, most of the river water is removed for irrigation, and the remainder of the Colorado's 30 mile course across Arizona to the international border is through a wide, bushy strip of sandy land.
