White Canyon is a very long drainage, over 30 miles, and around half is at least moderately enclosed, but the best section is a 2 mile stretch towards the lower end - 7 miles from the high water mark of Lake Powell - which is centered on a very narrow, permanently flooded passageway of 500 feet. This is the
Black Hole, and to pass through requires a long swim in water that stays cold even in midsummer. Log jams create added difficulties, though hikes just to either end of the flooded section are more straightforward.
