Waterholes Canyon passes under US 89 just south of Page in north Arizona, meeting the Colorado River after several miles of deep, narrow passages, some of which are explorable by regular hiking though most require ropes. On the other side of the highway, the drainage forms some shallower but still pretty narrows, more easily followed, giving way after 1.3 miles to an open, sandy wash. Further upstream, the canyon splits into several tributaries, at least four of which contain short sections of much narrower slots, very similar to nearby Antelope Canyon. One of these is known as
Secret Canyon, but after a recent change in policy, all may only be visited as part of guided tours, costing around $100 per person; visitors are driven here by Hummer, and have an hour or so to explore the narrows.
