Starting Water Wash
PreviousDark passageway, deep into the narrows of Starting Water WashNext

Like several other canyons within the jurisdiction of the Kaibeto Chapter of the Navajo Reservation east of Page, Starting Water Wash has been closed since 1998 going to several instances of hikers becoming stuck and requiring rescue, which is a pity since this is probably the best non-technical slot canyon in Arizona with relatively easy access. Some parts are so deep and the rocks above overhanging, that lengthy passageways are completely black - the drainage is more like a cave than a canyon - and contain some sheer drops, but much can be explored without any equipment, starting from the upper end.

Location: Nine miles along a dirt track on the north side of Hwy 98 - details
