Egypt Bench is a low mesa of Navajo sandstone on the west side of the Escalante River, drained by several narrow canyons along the south edge, of which
Egypt 3 is the best, descending moderately steeply in three distinct sections; a more open part through smooth rocks with many potholes leads to a very tight, darker stretch enclosed by unusual, knobbly walls, and finally a shorter, lower passage with deep pools and one drop needing rappelling to overcome. Most can be explored without equipment, though the canyon is still quite difficult, and the access road is rough.
Location: 15 miles down Hole-in-the-Rock road then 9 miles along a rougher side track -
