Just east of
Zion National Park,
Sand Wash is an upper tributary of the East Fork of the Virgin River, with two main branches, both forming relatively shallow but very colorful slots through red Navajo sandstone, collectively known as
Red Cave. Some parts contain pools after wet weather, and dryfalls, but use of different entry/exit routes allow most sections to be seen quite easily. In some places, bright green moss creates a pretty contrast with the dark red sandstone walls. Previous access to the canyons was from below, across private land, but now the slots need a longer drive/hike to reach.
